Herne: Dying God and Pagan Revival

11 December 2013 (Wednesday) @ 7:30 pm - 9:00 pm

Lecture by Dr. John Callow

From Shakespeare’s Merry Wives of Windsor,  through Gothic novels, to modern television ,  Herne gives a powerful vision of paganism tied to place, nature and ecology.   Along the way Herne has transformed from royal servant and spirit of nemesis, into  a potent and loved figure in today’s pantheon of pagan deities. A nightmare to some, a dream to others, his tread upon the forest floor continues to provide a vital link between the hunter and the hunted. Come hear his story. John Callow did his early work on witch hunts and has a forthcoming book on witch imagery with publisher IB Tauris.  He is a gifted speaker and a friend of Treadwell’s who returns at our invitation.
