Treadwell’s patron spirit is Lady Wisdom from Michael Maier’s 1617 alchemical work, Atalanta Fugiens. You will find her on our labels and signs.
Maier wrote about her: ‘This is the all-surpassing Lady Wisdom, who with her right hand penetrates the East, with her left hand the West, and who embraces the whole Earth. ‘
He goes on to say that she gives long life and good health, yet she conceals abundant treasures. Her generosity extends to the whole world: ‘whoever values wisdom shall be exalted and honoured by Her.’
Our patron, she epitomises our aspirations and embodies ideals we espouse.
Here are some more excerpts from the text concerning her image:
‘In human affairs there is no greater than [Lady] Wisdom,
She who gives rise to wealth and health.
In her right hand she keeps a long life in good health.
and her left hand conceals overwhelming treasures.
When a person comes to her with head and hand,
She will be for him as valuable as
the fruit of the Tree of Life.’
‘This is the all-surpassing [Lady] Wisdom, who with her right hand penetrates the East, with her left hand the West, and who embraces the whole Earth. This is the Wisdom of which Solomon speaks so well in his Book of Wisdom, showing us that those who know her shall have eternal perseverance, and that her friends partake of sincere pleasures.
And whoever diligently seeks her shall receive much joy, for there is no tediousness in her conversation, but rather being with her is mirth and gladness. And though wine and music cheer the heart, yet Wisdom is more pleasant than both, for she is the Tree of Life to all that lay hold upon Her, and every one who retains her has happiness. Lactantius thus calls her ‘the food of the soul.
The wise shall inherit glory, and whoever values wisdom shall be exalted and honoured by Her.’
