The Celtic Revival’s Forgotten Mystic

Lecture – Sally North

Early 20th century Ireland produced a community of mystical nationalists, of which the best known is poet WB Yeats. Tonight is dedicated to the least known, the artist Art O’Murnaghan (1875-1953). Deeply visionary, he was at Theosophist who was also involved in the new Irish theatre as an actor/manager/musician. His private papers reveal his fascination with Irish druids, fairies and secret mystery schools.

Famed English occultist Dion Fortune admired O’Murnaghan so much she invited him to join in the Society of the Inner Light’s rituals. She called him the ‘Hibernian adept’.

Speaker Sally North is currently writing a book on Irish mysticism and nationalism; she has particular interests in liminal cultural space, the Celtic Revival, and the history of ideas.
