Dragons! From China to Alchemy to Medieval England

Afternoon Lecture – Ruth Clydesdale

Coinciding with the British Library Harry Potter Exhibition

The Harry Potter novels revived interest in mythical creatures and none moreso than the dragon. This engaging illustrated slide lecture is held to coincide with the British Library’s Harry Potter Exhibition, and it brings the legends and lore of dragons to life. We meet the dragons of China, of English landscape lore and of alchemy, and through that journey better understand how and why they reappear in our generations’ stories – from Tolkien and JK Rowling to Game of Thrones:  humans have for  centuries created the dragon’s affinity to the human, and to the land.

Ruth Clydesdale is an vibrant lecturer, a researcher of myth and neoplatonic Renaissance ideas.  Her background in hermetic philosophy is complemented by a lifelong enggemetn with art history. She is a regular speaker in the Treadwell’s lecture series.
