Egyptomania’s Magical Jewels
27 May 2015 (Wednesday) @ 7:30 pm - 9:00 pm
Eleanor Dobson (Birmingham)
Victorian and Edwardian Egytomania included a love of ancient amuletic jewellery: Oscar Wilde’s scarab ring, Rider Haggard’s charm collection, and Bram Stoker’s fictional ruby. Some thought items plucked from mummy bandages brought good luck, but others feared curses. Tonight explores beliefs about them — and the compelling magical symbols inscribed on them. Eleanor Dobson is workingon a PhD on Egyptology and literary culture in the late 19th & early 20th centuries.
