Félicien Rops and Evil Women: Art of a Decadent Demoniac

Lecture – Madeleine LeDespencer

The Belgian erotic illustrator Félicien Rops (1833-1898) gave the world alluring images of feminine evil in fin de siècle France, earning him the place as a leading illustrator of 19th-century dark eroticism. Rops’ work captures the diabolical spirit of the Decadents; unsurprisingly, he was the illustrator of choice for Charles Baudelaire and Joséphin Péladan.  In this illustrated lecture, Madeleine LeDespencer explores how female sexuality was celebrated, othered, and endarkened in Rops’ art. Prepare for pearl-clutching!

Madeleine LeDespencer is an expert on French 19th century decadent occultism. A researcher and collector, she is a co-editor of WITCH-IKON, a collection of essays on witch iconography and symbolism in sorcery.Party follows lecture.
