Dragons in Western Art

Here be Dragons

Lecture – Dr Joanne Anderson

From ancient myth to fantasy novels, dragons occupy a powerful place in our imaginations. They are portents of doom, agents of occult realms and markers of the unknown, to feared and revered in equal measure. Tonight’s speaker considers: what did it mean to believe in these creatures in past times, and did the arts have a role to play? This illustrated art lecture looks at the mythic beast across the European landscape through typologies, superstitions and hoaxes. Join us.

Dr Joanne Anderson is Lecturer in Art History at the Warburg Institute, London.
