Hermes-Mercury, God of Alchemy

– Lecture – Paul Cowlan

If alchemy has a patron deity it’s Hermes, god of riddles, tricks and secrets; or as the Romans called him, Mercury; tutelary wheeler-dealer deity of trade, thieves and market places. The arch illusionist, the ultimate Tricky-Dickie, he is the fluid that is really a metal but behaves like a liquid. But he also the spiritual essence, the divine messenger, the only one who can lead you safely through the darkness of psychological dissolution. Paul doesn’t promise to tame him, but he will make Apollo’s tricky younger brother a little easier to comprehend.

Paul Cowlan lives in Germany, where he works as a professional musician. He will be in London on a short visit, and returns to Treadwell’s by popular demand.
