India’s Aghori: the Cemetery-dwellers

Slide Lecture – Darragh Mason Field

Photographer Darragh Mason Field tonight introduces the Aghori of Varanasi, a  Hindu sect  distinctive for their close working with human skulls and cremated remains in their spiritual practice — following what Western occultists call ‘left-hand path’. The Aghori have captured the imagination of the western occultist and the ethnographer alike: smearing themselves with human ash, and drinking from skulls, the observer is drawn to ask: why, and to what end? Darragh  spent time with them, and shares the tales, history and photographs from his time in their company, in the cremation grounds on the banks of the Ganges  – and then in their hidden temples and their leprosy hospital.

Darragh Mason Field is award winning culture photographer and researcher; he studied photography at Dublin City University and travels extensively, writing articles and publishing photography. His  first book  Mazdoor, India at work was published in March 2013. His work was selected in the top 50 images for the Travel Photographer Asia 2015. His photographs have appeared in The Guardian, BBC in Pictures RTE News, Geographical Magazine, and is available through Redux Pictures and Barcroft Media.
