Magical Stones and Gems in Pre-modern England

Lecture – Francis Young

Understanding the occult ‘virtues’ of stones and minerals was central to the practice of magic in medieval and early modern England — from the scrying stones of ritual magicians to ground-up gems in medicinal powder of physicians. A particular class of magical literature, the lapidaries, described stones’ properties and included things like a recipe for a magic mirror, and a method for speaking with the dead. Tonight this world is opened up for the audience, with examples drawn from England’s longest lapidary, which Francis has recently translated.

Francis Young is an historian and translator. He gained is PhD from Cambridge University and works on Catholicism in East Anglia, supernatural beliefs in early modern England and the translation of early modern Latin texts, including the Peterborough Lapidary and the Cambridge Book of Magic..
