Pamela Colman Smith: Her Life and Art, with Fireplace Unveiling
Talk and Fireplace Unveiling – Christina Oakley Harrington
The artist of the famed Rider-Waite tarot deck was Pamela Colman Smith (1878-1951). A trained magician who had belonged to the Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn, she has since her death become an icon for women occultists of today. Creative, Sapphic, commonly thought in her own to day to have been of mixed race, Colman Smith lived for her art, for women’s equality and for religion. This talk introduces ‘Pixie’s’ magical and personal life and her homes in London and Cornwall.
The evening centres upon welcoming Smith’s beloved fireplace to the Treadwells hearth: the art-deco fireplace was transported from her former home in Parc Garland on the Lizard, Cornwall, as part of a recent salvage. We are its new guardians thanks to the generosity of a friend of Treadwell’s. Half of the ticket income from this event will be donated to the charity Opening Doors, a charity for elderly LGBT people.
