Jung’s Red Book: Occult Themes and Symbols

Lecture – Dr Vivianne Crowley

Carl Jung’s Red Book (Liber Novus) was his private hand-written book written during a profoundly mystical period of his life; it was, he said, the foundation of all his subsequent work…. and is full of esoteric, occult and Pagan themes.  Tonight’s  lecture shows that Jung’s experiences led him to believe that humanity was soon to enter a New Aeon; the Red Book illustrates he thought it would be characterised by individual transformation that would give birth to new gods.  This sense of a forthcoming New Age was shared by Aleister Crowley and other contemporary esoteric mystics, and it is a concept which our speaker tonight explores in light of Jung’s profound influence on twentieth-century esotericism. This lecture is the second in a series on Jung’s Red Book.

Vivianne Crowley BSc, PhD, AFBPsS, CPsychol is a Chartered Psychologist with a doctorate in psychology. Her counselling training was conducted at the Centre for Transpersonal Psychology. Dr Crowley has held posts at University of London, Nottingham Trent, and Cherry Hill Seminary.  She is the author of many books, including Jung: Journey of Transformation.
