Sex and Empire: The Cannibal Club’s Edward Sellon

Lecture – Phil Hine

The Cannibal Club was a nineteenth-century coterie of influential gentlemen fascinated by sexuality, including ‘deviancy’ – often through anthropological enquiry and published erotica. Its members came together to form club of fascination at the crossroads of anthropology, empire, and pornography.  The club’s most infamous member, Edward Sellon (1818–1866)  is the starting point for this lecture on the group’s ideas and influence. Join us for a  trip into a world where the ‘secrets’ of sexuality and perversion were beginning to be laid bare, and into a time when the British Empire was reconfigured as a zone of sexual adventurism.  We promise you’ll never see colonialism the same way ever again.

The Cannibal Club included Richard Burton, James Hunt (founder of the Anthropological Society of London),  Richard Monckton Miles, Algernon Swinburne, Simeon Solomon and Charles Bradlaugh.

Phil Hine is an independent researcher who has been writing on esoteric matters for over thirty years. A engaging speaker, he returns at our invitation.
