The Supernatural in the Great War

Lecture – Matt Wingett

The Great War saw a massive upsurge in belief in all matters spiritual. During the shock of humanity’s first experience of mechanised warfare, reports of spiritual phenomena on the battlefield were commonplace. Sightings of naval fleets in the sky, angels and bowmen protecting retreating troops, and spirit guides in No Man’s Land were all part of the mix reported widely at the time.

Meanwhile, on the home front, the rise of the religion of Spiritualism promised contact for the living with those who had died. The movement swept through the nation, leading to vigorous debate  – and the Church even accused leading Spiritualist figures (such as Sir Arthur Conan Doyle Sir Oliver Lodge) of — truly — necromancy. Thus  a war of belief opened up alongside the war between nations.

Join us for an illustrated lecture that will change the way you see the First World War, and will make you look anew at Edwardian occultism.

Matt Wingett is a local historian and publisher, author of the recent study of Conan Doyle’s spiritalism Conan Doyle and the Mysterious World of Light.  A compelling speaker, he lectured at Treadwells last year and returns by popular demand.
