About The Event

In pre-modern Europe, possibly the most taboo things a magician could do was to summon up the spirit of a dead person. disturbing their godly rest and calling them back to the mortal world.  Thomas Blout's 1661 Glossographia says it is one who 'practises that wicked Art, a Master of the Black Art, one that seeks to the dead; or consults with Satan in the shape of a dead man. But how did they do it? In this lively lecture Dr Al Cummins reveals just that, using early modern grimoires and folk magic information. Come learn about the prescribed diets, garb, incenses, incantations, and dreams to raise the shades of those who went before. For as ever, people have longed to learn --  both directly and indirectly -- from the dead magicians who came before us.

Dr Al Cummins completed his doctorate at University of Bristol under Professor Ronald Hutton, and is author of numerous books and articles. Now based in Brooklyn, NY, he teaches history and practice of traditional magical arts; he does this both online and in person at AlexanderCummins.com
