About The Event
Victoria Jenkins, an archivist working at Tate, introduces the esoteric side of 20th-century artists in this illustrated lecture which launches her new book, Visions of the Occult. Making art and performing magic are two forms of resistance and creative expression; in many artists they came together, with astonishing results: we meet Ithell Colquhoun, Paul Nash, Barbara Hepworth, Cecil Collins, John William Waterhouse, Alan Davie, Joe Tilson, Henry Moore, Eileen Agar, William Blake, Leonora Carrington and Pamela Colman Smith. Victoria will change the way you see 20th-century art, and will delight you with anecdotes about the magic-related objects, sketchbooks, letters and photos she's found in the museum's vaults. Please join us, and stay for drinks with Victoria afterward.
