A Course in Mandarin Lessons - CW Mateer
A fascinating witness to American missionary presence in China at the turn of the twentieth century.
These language lessons range from sample commercial transactions, basic descriptions of everyday things and activities to imaginary but common conversations. Each lesson has the Chinese text on the left side of the page with English translation on the right side, and problem vocabulary words in both Chinese and English at the bottom of the page. The interior pages are beautiful in themselves, with layout, design and pictograms. Full title is A Course in Mandarin Lessons, Based on Idiom
Shanghai: American Presbyterian Missionary Press. 1903. Hardback, 781 pages.
Volume and Condition: Original half red cloth binding, with green cloth boards, titled in gilt to the spine. The hinge of the front board has superficially cracked, and there is some scuffing and fraying to the corners and spine ends. Structurally sound, a very good copy. Internally clean, with two London Anglo Chinese Library stamps to the back of the title page.
