This Pan paperback, subtitled 'The Mechanics of Indoctrination, Brainwashing and Thought Control' is Sargent's study of political conversion and religious conversion - and does so in the framework of Pavlovian psychology. British psychiatrist who is remembered for the evangelical zeal with which he promoted treatments such as psychosurgery, deep sleep treatment, electroconvulsive therapy and insulin shock therapy. This 1961 pulp paperback of the 1957 work was in the library of Zachary Cox, a well-known British occultist whose formative personal studies focussed on the mind, belief, and its inner workings: he was reading this book at the same time as he was exploring Dianetics, then recently arrived in the UK. The book contains 8 pages of black and white plates.
