Doreen Valiente: Witch - Philip Heselton

Biography of an early Gardnerian witch Doreen Valiente (1922-1999), one of the important first-generation Craft priestesses

Valiente was a lifelong practitioner of the Craft as well as an active writer. She helped make the Craft accessible to the wider world through her many well-regarded books which appeared through the 1970s and 1980s. This is the first biography to be written on her; it draws a rich portrait and solves quite a few mysteries about her life.  Historian Philip Heselton draws on first-hand testimonies and extensive archival records to trace Valiente's life from childhood through her secret war work, to her involvement with Gerald Gardner, the witch cult, and then the wider Pagan community. It is an important work on a person who played an important role in Wicca's growth from underground secret societyh to worldwide spiritual movement in the course of just a few decades.

Author Philip Heselton has written extensively on earth mysteries and more recently on the history of the modern witchcraft revival. He is one of the world's foremost experts on the subject and his acclaimed two-volume biography of Gerald Gardner, Witchfather, was published in 2012.
