Life of Merlin - with - Prophwydoliaeth Myrddin

Two works on Merlin bound together in the nineteenth century.

1. Life of Merlin surnamed Ambrosius; his Prophecies and Predictions Interpreted...Thomas Heywood. Most likely the Carmarthen Edition of this work. [1812]. Tentatively identifiable as the Carmarthen edition of this work (mainly through typeface, but also through the presence of the Myrddin Wyllt pamphlet), predating the London edition by a few months. A reprint of the 1641 edition, scarce and desirable in its own right.

2. Prophwydoliaeth Myrddin Wyllt...Caerfyrddin: S. Jones (circa 1860) 16pp.] 8.5” x 5” 324pp. + 16pp. Verse pamphlet. Bound in at the rear is the Welsh Language pamphlet printed in Carmarthen, which is the verse form of the prophecies of Merlin (also included in the main text translated into English, and in full in Welsh). The pamphlet also contains some translation notes and clarification in a contemporary ink hand. A ridiculously slight and ephemeral object, obviously not printed for durability, only one copy of this imprint is locatable through the usual catalogues.

Volume and Condition. Contemporary full roan leather, worn to extremities and hinges, a trifle fragile but solid and handsome. Lacking title page, some staining and wear to extremities of the first page of text, not interfering with the content. Of particular interest is the inclusion of the Welsh language pamphlet.  A scarce pair of works in any edition.
