Ajit Mookerjee is an art historian of India's traditional arts and crafts, widely published and highly acclaimed; more than that, he has decades of intimate study and practice in Indian Tantra. This large-format art book consists largely of full-page images of tantric art, some in black and white, many in full colour. Painting, drawing and sculpture are all included. The images are introduced by an extended essay by Mookerjee. This copy is inscribed by him.
New Delhi: Ravi Kumar, Kumar Gallery, 1966 Signed First Edition. Hardback, 143 + 8 pages.
Tantra Art, Ajit Mookerjee. 31 x 27 cms, 143 pp + 8 pp bibliography. Bound in publisher's original red cloth, but dustwrapper has been secured to prevent its removal and further description of the cloth binding and title remains a mystery. Very minor bumping to tail of spine. Author's gift inscription to flyleaf dated 1972. Internally clean, with minor browning to page edges commensurate with age. Some very minor creasing to front and rear flyleaves. Dustwrapper is bright and striking, it has, however, suffered extensive loss to the top of the front panel, alongside chipping to the panel extremities, and some loss to the head and tail of the panel spine. Rear panel has some soiling and scratching, with a tear to the lower panel corner with signs of repair. Overall a very good, colourful copy of a beautiful study of Tantric art.
