London: The Courtauld Gallery, 2016. Softcover, 84 pages. New.
Georgiana Houghton (1814-1884) was a Spiritualist Medium who, in the 1860s and 1870s, produced a remarkable series of largely abstract watercolours, guided, she said, by various spirits including higher angelic beings and several Renaissance Artists. In 1871, Houghton rented a gallery in Old Bond Street and presented her ‘spirit drawings’ to a startled London Audience.
Georgiana Houghton: Spirit Drawings has been produced by the Courtauld Gallery to accompany the exhibition of her works in 2016. The book contains full-colour reproductions of Houghton’s 21 ‘spirit drawings’ accompanied by photos of her notes on each work. The accompanying essays, with contributions by Simon Grant, Marco Pasi and Lars Bang Larsen, provide biographical background on Houghton and her spiritual vision; and the influence of Spiritualism on contemporary art. A fascinating work for anyone interested in Spiritualism or Esoteric Art.
