Love Magic for the Urban Witch

Love Magic for the Urban Witch:

Historic Sources and Practical Applications

Afternoon Class – Suzanne Corbie

For the modern urban witch, this intensive afternoon gives a feminist and creative approach to love magic, drawing on historical materials from the ancient and pre-modern periods. The introductory talk looks at  specific practices of love magic in ancient Sumer, Egypt,  and the Graeco-Roman world, examining a selection of rituals, charms, spells and symbols. From this base, the tutor leads the class in translating the ancient practices into workings applicable today. The philosophical issues of magic are considered, as are the radical potentials of self-love and healing.  This day offers a way into an adventurous witchcraft which is attentive to the powerful antecedents from History.  The workings here can be applied to activism for social justice as much as for inner self-empowerment.

Tutor Suzanne Corbie is a lifelong student of myth and cosmology; she has been a Wiccan since her teens, and she has been teaching the magical arts for most of her adult life. She brings vitality, experience and wisdom to her highly-popular courses.  People of all ages, genders, sexualities, and ethnicities welcome: we are inclusive and diverse. Price includes all supplies and handouts.

Witchcraft and Gay Liberation 1969/2019

Witchcraft and Gay Liberation 1969/2019
Lecture – Dr Brooke Palmieri

American author Leo Louis Martello (1930-2000) is best known for  Weird Ways of Witchcraft (1969) and Witchcraft: The Old Religion (1973).  Martello combined the spiritual with the political as a founding member of the Gay Liberation Front (GLF). Tonight’s speaker introduces this remarkable figure, and shows how Martello’s work, writings, and friendships advocate nothing less than a revolution in the history of witchcraft. Martello was among the first to champion a witchcraft that was inclusive of gender non-conformity and sexual dissidence, mostly by emphasising those aspects from the history of witchcraft itself. Join us for a remarkable evening, celebrating fifty years since the Stonewall Riots.

Dr Brooke Sylvia Palmieri is a writer, educator and bookseller. Palmieri is editor of  Printing History and owner of Camp Books, which specialises in new and used works that celebrate queer history.
