About The Event
Death rituals shape how cultures understand loss, remembrance and the afterlife.
In this in-person talk at Treadwell’s, Dr Sarah Hiepler-Basty shares a colourful selection of funerary practices drawn from her PhD research in anthropology and archaeology. From ancient Egyptian rites to contemporary space burials, she traces how different cultures have approached death and the care of the dead. The talk invites reflection on how personal beliefs and practices – religious, spiritual or otherwise – sit within this wider history. In a characteristic Treadwell’s touch, she also brings in connections between death studies and the tarot. An audience Q&A and complimentary drinks soirée follows.
Dr Sarah Hiepler-Basty is a scholar of anthropology, archaeology and art history. She has lectured and taught at St Andrews and the University of Aberdeen.
