About The Event
Concealed shoes, mummified cats and strange markings reveal Britain’s hidden tradition of magical protection.
In this in-person illustrated lecture, archaeologist Wayne Perkins explores ritual protection in the home. Drawing on decades of research, he discusses objects placed within houses to guard against harm – from graffiti and burn marks to witch bottles. The evening considers the beliefs behind these practices and how magic shaped daily life in the Early Modern period. A Q&A follows, with a soirée and complimentary drinks. Wayne's new book A Consensus of Symbols: Patterns in Ritual Building Protection (Aeon Books), will be available for purchase and signing on the night.
Wayne Perkins is an archaeologist with over twenty years’ experience, specialising in historic buildings and ritual markings. His work focuses on the material traces of magical practice in Britain and Europe, including concealed objects and apotropaic symbols. He has published in London Archaeologist and Surrey Archaeological Collections.
