About The Event
Many queer people today turn to witchcraft seeking a spiritual practice that affirms their identities. The relationship between queerness and modern witchcraft, however, has at times been uneasy.
In this illustrated lecture, Jules McArthur traces the presence and influence of queer people within the history of modern witchcraft. The talk considers notable figures such as Aleister Crowley and Doreen Valiente, alongside lesser-known pioneers including Jani Farrell-Roberts, one of the first trans High Priestesses in Gardnerian Wicca. The evening concludes with an exploration of what it means to be a queer witch today. Afterwards, we'll open the floor for a Q&A before enjoying complimentary wine upstairs.
Jules McArthur is a queer witch, scholar and tarot reader. They studied Classics at the universities of Durham and Cambridge, specialising in the magic of the Late Antique Mediterranean. Their other research interests include the reception of the ancient world in modern paganism, ancient Hermeticism…
