About The Event
For over two millennia, London's 'south of the river' was associated with debauchery (as well as Shakespeare, King Henry VIII and other famous men). But what of its women?
In this all-new, rollicking walking tour, Maria Beadell is the ‘local whore guide’ leading the group along the river and into Southwark's hidden corners, where women played a key role in its colourful past. From a pagan goddess who inspired orgies, to an infamous brothel owner, to an extremely unlucky nun, participants are introduced to a host of feminine heroines who once haunted the bankside backstreets, either in body or spirit. Expect street theatre, character acting and a fresh perspective on a darkly historical area of the capital. At the end of the journey, attendees have the option to join Maria for a tipple in a local Edwardian pub.
Meet at the top of the steps of Southwark cathedral on London Bridge Road at 18.30. The Tour leaves at 18.45 precisely. Maria will be wearing a toga and gold cloak – you can’t miss her! Tour duration: between 1.5 – 2 hours, ending at Red Cross Gardens. Photos may be taken, but recording or filming of the tour is not allowed.
Maria Beadell is an independent writer, performer, actor and founder of Herstorical Tours. She is fascinated by women's history in the capital.
