About The Event

This lively walking tour explores the history of the sex trade in Covent Garden and what it meant for women in 18th century London. Tour guide Maria Beadell is 'The Baroness' leading the group through central London's backstreets. Expect to hear stories of real women from history, from high class courtesans to gin-addled street walkers, business-savvy brothel madams to wisened old crones. Featuring street theatre and character acting, this walk gives a voice to women who had none, in a profession that existed to serve men.

Content warning: contains themes of rape, sexual exploitation, abuse and violence.

Meet outside Covent Garden tube station at 19.50 – tour leaves at 20.00 precisely.

Duration: 1.5 – 2 hours, ending at The Nell Gwynne Tavern.

Photos may be taken, but recording or filming of the tour is not allowed.

Maria Beadell is an independent writer, performer, actor and founder of Herstorical Tours. She is fascinated by women's history in the capital.
