About The Event

This rollicking walking tour explores the history of the sex trade in Covent Garden, the centre of the sex trade in the eighteenth century, and what it meant for women in Georgian London. Tour guide  Maria Beadell is  “The Baroness”  leading the group down the seedy backstreets and introducing  real women from history, from high class courtesans to gin-addled street walkers, business-savvy brothel madams and wisened old crones.  Expect character acting and lively street theatre. This walk gives voice to womenwho had none, in a profession that existed to serve men.  Content warning:  contains themes of rape, sexual exploitation, abuse and violence.

Meet: outside Covent Garden tube Station at 7.50, tour leaves 8.00 precisely. Duration: between 1.5 - 2 hours, ending at The Nell Gwynne Tavern.

Maria Beadell is an independent writer, performer and actor and founder of Herstorical Tours. She is fascinated by women's history in the capital. Treadwell's is delighted to be working with her. Photos may be taken, but recording or filming of the tour is not allowed.
