About The Event
The Greek Magical Papyri (Papyri Graecae Magicae, otherwise known as the PGM) is a remarkable ancient collection of surviving spells, rituals and devotional texts from Greco-Roman Egypt.
In this practical 3-part course, Lusete introduces the magical techniques found within these famous manuscripts, which date from around 100 BCE to 400 CE. Ideal for beginners – or for those who own the PGM and are unsure where to begin – the course explores how the papyri were used in the ancient world and how they can be approached today. Each in-person session is followed by a 2-week break, giving participants time to reflect on the material and put what they have learned into practice between classes.
Course format:
Week 1 – Foundations of the PGM (Sunday 26 July)
Explore the historical and cultural background of the PGM
Learn the core concepts underpinning Greco-Roman Egyptian magic
