About The Event
Tonight we celebrate Professor Marion Gibson's new book, Witchcraft. In a lively sofa chat, Christina will ask her about its themes: misogyny, witch-hunting, racism, colonialism, legalised persecution and even demon-phobia. After a fun audience Q & A, we will all raise a toast, then mix and mingle with wine and snacks, chatting with Marion and inviting her to sign our copies. Prompt 7pm start.Â
Witchcraft: A History in Thirteen Trials (Simon & Schuster) tells the history of witch persecution through famous cases from early modern Britain, Europe and the wider world including Africa. It foregrounds the victims, usually ignored in favour of those who hounded them. Along the way the reader meets French radical historians, Jazz Age murderers, and fanatical Christian missionaries. Marian Gibson is Professor of Renaissance and Magical Literatures at University of Exeter.
