About The Event

Althea Gyles (1867–1949) was a vivid presence in the occult and art worlds of fin-de-siècle Britain, though her work has long remained in the margins.

In this in-person lecture, Dr Sally North brings Gyles back into view as an esoteric artist, illustrator and poet. Moving in the same circles as W. B. Yeats, Aleister Crowley and the Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn, she channelled occult ideas directly into her creative life – prompting Yeats to call her a “great mediator of symbols”. As women artist-occultists step out of the shadows, this talk restores Gyles to the story. This evening also celebrates the publication of Mysterious Rose: Althea Gyles and W. B. Yeats (Holythorn Press), followed by complimentary drinks and a signing.

Dr Sally North holds a PhD in History, and works on the history of magic, Irish myth and legend, W. B. Yeats and the Celtic Revival, the intersections…
