For over two millennia, London's 'south of the river' was associated with debauchery (and notably termed ‘a foul dene’). We know about its famous men, but what of its women? Celebrate the Celtic festival of Beltane with a unique insight into the HERstories, the Goddesses and the Gals that shaped Southwark.
In this rollicking walking tour, follow Maria Beadell along the river and into Southwark's hidden corners to meet the women who played a key role in its colourful past. From a pagan goddess who inspired orgies, to a shapeshifting creature that cursed men, to the good-time girls that once haunted Bankside, walkers are introduced to a host of heroines that shaped Southwark's history and visit the hidden locations where it all unfolded. Expect street theatre, character acting and a fresh perspective on a darkly historical area of the capital. At the end of the journey, attendees have the option…
