About The Event
This intimate event at Treadwell's offers a rare opportunity to learn from a Kolkata native who was raised with the rich traditions of the Indian goddess Kali.
Kamakshi Lalita joins Christina Oakley Harrington on the Treadwell's sofa as she talks about growing up in the shadow of her city's Kalighat temple. She discusses the conduct, ceremony and secrecy involved with becoming formally dedicated to the goddess, and the many traditions she grew up with. Kamakshi, who works professionally as a writer and researcher, will be talking about Kali beyond the Western stereotypes, touching upon Bengali culture, Shakta Tantra, and syncretic traditions like the baul-fakir and sufi-bhakti movements.
In addition, she addresses an important issue: how can a non-adept or non-initiate develop a relationship with Kali that is respectfully non-colonial? Audience questions will conclude the discussion, after which all are invited to stay for a friendly soirée on the shopfloor, with complimentary wine and soft drinks.
Kamakshi Lalita has been a friend of Treadwell's since her visit just after lockdown. She divides her time between London and Kolkata. Professionally, she is a writer, editor and researcher, with published works that explore themes of the sacred, the supernatural, embodiment and gender.
