About The Event
In fairytales, magical animals and familiars often play a crucial role ... from the helpful and transformative to the downright terrifying.
In this online workshop, Bernadette Russell invites students to bring their own enchanting beasts to life through creative writing. The group begins by considering famous familiars in literature, from the witches' companions 'Graymalkin' and 'Paddock' in Shakespeare's Macbeth, to the 'dæmons' of Philip Pullman's His Dark Materials. Students then explore animal guides in shamanic practices, and those present in the records of many European witch trials. Afterwards, everyone is invited to create their own creature-laded creative pieces using prompts, free writing and timed exercises (with a chance to share work, if desired).
Ideal for anyone interested in dark fairytales, folklore and the power of words, this workshop is equally suitable for seasoned and new writers. By the end, everyone will have a new inspirational toolbox and some practice crafting…
