About The Event
Join Irving Finkel and Sophie Sleigh-Johnson in-person at Treadwell's as they discuss Ancient Mesopotamian necromancy and ghost belief.
Irving Finkel, Keeper of Mesopotamian script at the British Museum, has published on the subject from a scholarly point of view. Sophie Sleigh-Johnson has placed cuneiform into more contemporary occult territories with her new book Code: Damp. Expect a wide-ranging conversation about the haunted, the sacred, fiction, scholarship, marshlands and the returning dead. An audience Q&A follows. Afterwards, we'll head upstairs for a soirée on the shopfloor, with complimentary drinks and signings of both authors' books.
Book Information
Finkel's book, The First Ghosts (2021), mines the cuneiform tablets of the Sumerians, Babylonians and Assyrians to uncover and retell the first ghost stories ever written. It reveals what these ancient societies believed about ghosts, including their methods to banish, summon and avoid becoming one.
