About The Event

From witches and faeries to storms and transformations, magic plays a central role in many of Shakespeare’s most famous works.

In this online creative writing workshop, Bernadette Russell explores how Shakespeare used magic as a storytelling force, drawing on the beliefs and fears of his time. The group turns to three richly magical plays – Macbeth, The Tempest and A Midsummer Night’s Dream – meeting figures such as Prospero, Ariel, Titania, Oberon, Puck, the Weird Sisters and the formidable Sycorax. Through discussion of these characters, their spells, transformations and moral ambiguities, participants gather inspiration for their own work. Afterwards, the group is invited to create new pieces using prompts, free writing and timed exercises, with the option to share them if desired.

Ideal for anyone interested in literature, magic and creative writing, this workshop is equally suitable for seasoned and new writers. By the end, everyone will have fresh inspiration…
