About The Event

In the not-so-ancient past, Covent Garden was known as much for its prostitution as its theatre.

This lively walking tour explores the history of the sex trade in central London, from the perspective of women living in the 18th century. Tour guide Maria Beadell is 'The Baroness' leading the group down the capital's backstreets, through 'the great square of Venus' (Drury Lane) and beyond. Expect to hear stories of real women, from high class courtesans to gin-addled street walkers, business-savvy brothel madams to wisened old crones. Featuring street theatre and character acting, this tour gives a voice to women who had none, in a profession that existed to serve men.

Content warning: contains themes of rape, sexual exploitation, abuse and violence.

Meet at 19:20 outside Covent Garden tube station (the exit in front of the Sunglasses Hut shop). The tour leaves at 19:30 precisely. Maria will be wearing a red gown – you can’t miss her! Tour duration: between 1.5 – 2 hours, ending at The Nell Gwynne Tavern. Photos may be taken, but recording of the tour is not allowed.

Maria Beadell is an independent writer, performer, actor and founder of Herstorical Tours. She is fascinated by women's history in the capital.
