“I shall go into a hare….”. So said renowned Scottish witch Isabel Gowdie.
In this combined talk, workshop and story-performance live at Treadwell's, Joanna Gilar delves into the strange landscape of the witch hare. The group will learn about the folklore of this uncanny animal, and the feminine shape-shifters who have woven together a rich tapestry of stories. Expect to hear tales of magic mirrors that invite us into thud and fur, the hare-sacred Welsh valley, the old woman of Cornwall who used hare-shifting to save a girl from hell (and housework), and more.
Since September 2024, the arts collective StoryCommons has been bringing together storytellers from across the UK to explore and celebrate the multiplicity of witch hare tales. Joanna will share gleanings from the witch hare project, and speak about the chiasmic practice which invites these stories 'into wild company', allowing their collective power to be witnessed. This…
