About The Event
Santería – also known as Lukumí – is one of the most widely known yet least understood Afro-Diasporic religions.
In this illustrated talk at Treadwell’s, Iyalorisha Odofemí (Morgan M Page) introduces this rich tradition. Beginning with its origins in the transatlantic slave trade, she outlines its central practices, including devotion to the Orisha, ancestor veneration and divination. The talk also explores priesthood, ceremony, spirit possession, and Santería/Lukumí’s relationship with other Afro-Cuban traditions, offering a grounded overview of its philosophy and practices. A Q&A follows, along with a complimentary drinks soirée.
Morgan M Page (Odofemí) was initiated into Lukumí / Santería in 2010 and is now an Iyalorisha serving her own ilé (house/community), split between London and Oakland, California. She is a writer, LGBTQ+ historian and filmmaker. She is the author of the book Boys Don't Cry (2022) and the co-writer of the feature film Framing Agnes (2022).
