About The Event
The winter solstice carries a wealth of bird-lore, most famously tales of the robin and the wren.
In this immersive afternoon of story and ritual, Joanna Gilar traces the winter myths of these birds. Does the robin’s red breast come from flying into hell, or from tending the fires of the newborn god? How did the wren become king of the birds – and why is he hunted on St Stephen’s Day? The session concludes with a candle-making rite that honours the return of the light. Using beeswax and coloured wax, participants craft a spell candle to take home. All materials are provided. Expect an afternoon of folklore, storytelling and gentle ritual, held in a shared, reflective space to mark the turning of the year.
Please note: participation is optional throughout the workshop. There will be plenty of opportunity to discuss and co-create with others, but you're also welcome simply…
