Bernadette Russell

Bernadette Russell is an author, storyteller and creative writing tutor known for her warm, playful and imaginative teaching style. Drawing on myth, folklore and traditional storytelling, she helps students find their voice and bring their ideas to life.

Her storytelling practice has been shaped by study with Dr Martin Shaw at the West Country School of Myth, as well as Sharon Blackie and Jonathan Huet. Alongside her teaching, she is the author of several books, including How to Be Hopeful. Her work reflects a deep love of story and a belief in the transformative power of imagination.

At Treadwell's, Bernadette leads both online and in-person creative writing workshops inspired by magic, folklore and the mythic imagination. Past subjects have included fairies, folk horror, Shakespeare, vampires and alchemy – with new themes explored each year. Her classes are known for their warmth, humour and ability to inspire, helping students discover unexpected stories and find the confidence to put them on the page.

Bernadette is storyteller-in-residence at Lesnes Abbey Woods, where she hosts the seasonal storytelling event Rough Magic. Her work has also included performances, commissions and collaborations with organisations including the Royal Albert Hall, Tate Britain, the Natural History Museum, the National Theatre and the Southbank Centre.
