About The Event
This workshop will look closely at Michael Maier's alchemical emblem book, Atalanta Fugiens (dated1618).  Each of its fifty msyterious illustrations is accompanied by a motto, an epigram and a prose explanation  -- and also a short musical fugue. On more than one occasion Maier is quite specific: 'only when taken in an allegorical manner does it make sense .... If we take this emblem literally, nothing could be more nonsensical.' This is a day of studying a selection of the emblems, meditating on them, and having them teach you their wisdom. Tutor Paul Cowlan will show slides, do some talking, then participants will work in small groups and individually, teasing out themes and hidden meanings. Discussion, meditation, notes and interactive lectures make up the day.Â
Paul Cowlan has been a practitioner of spiritual alchemy for over thirty years. He writes, lectures and gives experiential workshops on it. He is a regular Treadwells tutor, who teaches here when in the UK on visits from his home in Germany. Max 16 participants.
Price: £75.  The deposit is £40, and a balance of £35 will be due on arrival on the day.Â
