This is a collection of writings on Satanism ranging from 1841 to 2017, accompanied by authoritative scholarly introductions by experts on the field.

The texts included in this book are arranged chronologically, providing a wide-ranging overview of the development of Satanism from its early history. Faxneld and Nilsson present a stance that the history of Satanism exists alongside the history of Christianity from its inception, highlighting the prominence of fears surrounding worship of 'the Devil’ as a dark mirror of Christian values. This historical reading lends itself to further exploration of how Satanism developed over time to contribute to occultism, counter-culture movements, anti-clerical sentiment, and more. Some of the pieces of writing included in this reader are excerpts from Jules Michelet’s La Sorciére, Albert Pike’s Morals and Dogma of the Ancient and Accepted Scottish Rite of Freemasonry, Aleister Crowley’s ‘Hymn to Lucifer,’ and many others.
