An exploration of the lives and work of women artists through the ages who were inspired by an interest in the spirit world.

Subtitled A Journey into Women, Art and the Spirit World, this book reflects on a much neglected – and at times derided – influence in the history of art: an interest in the spirit world, and in achieving communication with the other side. Driven by her own experiences with the otherworldly, the author explores this theme in the works of women artists through the ages: Hildegard von Bingen, Georgiana Houghton, Hilma af Klint, Agnes Pelton, Emma Kunz and Ithell Colquhoun – to name a few – whose visionary creations and lives show that the lines of connection between art and the supernatural run deeper and further than might be assumed. This is a fresh approach to art history – blended with biography and memoir – that provides a richer perspective, particularly on the relationship between art and the occult.
